About Ayvalik

LATEST - conference papers

Ayvalik is known for its beautiful coastline and attractive beaches and the best fish in Turkey.

Old Ayvalik has the feeling of a Greek rather than a Turkish village : with winding streets with wooden houses.

Around Ayvalik :

Sarimsakli is 8km from Ayvalik; a one kilometer long white sandy beach.

Seytan Sofrasi (Devil’s Table) is a hill from where there is a marvelous view on Ayvalik and its bay with the many islands.

The Alibey or Cunda island can be reached by dolmus or in the Summer by boat (recommended). You can visit some of the numerous monasteries there.

   HISTORY

Old Kydonia is today a small village opposite the Greek island Lesbos. Ayvalik was completely destroyed during the Greek Independance War (early 20th century) and has been resettled since 1923, after the Freedom Treaty of Lausanne, population moved, more than half a million Greeks left Asia Minor while Turks left Macedonia, Crete and Lesbos.
