RGS 2005 - Torun
conference - EU bids - Computers
in Geography workshop - IGU 2006
RGS-IBG, August 2005, London
HERODOT will be present at the RGS-IBG Annual Conference in London
at the Royal Geographical Socieity in August. HERODOT member Rob
van der Vaart (Utrecht) will present a paper on internationalisation
and HERODOT will co-sponsor and chair a session with the Higher
Education Research Group of the RGS-IBG. Karl Donert will jointly
chair the session with Michael Haigh (Oxford Brookes) and HERODOT
members Kostis Koutsopoulos (Athens), Karl Donert and Sally Edmondson
(Liverpool Hope) will present papers on aspects of internationalisation
and Geography. Sally will examine issues associated with fieldwork,
Karl will look at the development of HERODOT and the elearning survey
of HERODOT members undertaken earlier this year.
This
major international conference provides opportunities for the network
to promote itself to a wide international audience and enable the
research that has been undertaken by colleagues during the past
two years to be presented. It also provides an opportunity to link
to other networks and organisations.
HERODOT-EUROGEO
conference, Torun September 2005
Organisation for this large jointly organised international
conference is well underway. More than 50 full papers have been
submitted and prepared for publication. All
network members will receive copies of the publication after the
event. There will be three parallel
sessions throughout most of the event and workshops on a variety
of subjects. Visitors from a number of Geographical organisations
will attend, including the President of the Geographical Association
and the American Association of Geographers (AAG). To find out more,
visit the conference details on the EUROGEO Web site (http://www.eurogeo.org)
and select Association. The event has been supported by the European
Commission, ESRI-Europe, Routledge and the Polish Geography Association.
2005
Funding Application and Other EU Bids
HERODOT has applied for funding from the European Commission for
the year 2005/6 to organise a conference on interdisciplinarity.
if you ir your institution is working in an interdisciplinary way,
then we would like to hear from you. if you would like to be involved
in organising HERODOT events or participating in the new programme
then please contact Karl Donert.
HERODOT
members have developed proposals for a number of new projects in
2005. These include the Intensive Programmes of study, staff mobility,
curriculum development (undergraduate and Masters level) and Minerva
(Open and Distance Learning) as well as eLearning, teacher education,
research and Leonardo da Vinci (professional training) projects.
A Framework 6 research project on geoinformation has been submitted
in July 2005. If you know of any other projects submitted from the
network, please contact Karl
Donert.
Computers
in Geography Workshop: Brno, Czech Republic
This is a workshop for those interested in using computers as part
of teaching Geography in higher education. There are still a few
places available for this course. Please email Karl
Donert if you are interested in participating or would like
to present your activities. A European funding workshop is also
planned as part of this event in Brno, Czech Republic. The workshop
will take place in October 2005.
HERODOT
and the International Geographic Union (IGU)
The HERODOT coordinator Karl Donert will be attending the
IGU conference in 2006 in Brisbane, Australia as par tof the National
Teaching Fellowship he has been awarded by the Higher Education
Academy in the UK. If any other members of the network are planning
to attend, please contact Karl
Donert. Unfortunately, at this time no financial support is
available for those planning to attend.
Last
August, HERODOT members met with geography educators from around
the world at the IGU congress in Glasgow. One of the sessions was
about changes in geigraphy education in the US. A website has been
created by Sarah Bednarz as a resource for information about geography
education in the United States. Visit the site at the following
URL: http://cge.tamu.edu/igegc-cd/
The website provides links to information about geography education
in each of the eleven participants home states and sample geography
lessons from each participant. It also provides links to materials
discussed in the paper session. The PowerPoint presentation used
in the session is also available for download.

Network now stands at 145 partners, including 23 geography related
organisations, representing 29 countries within Europe and three
countries beyond.
The
Network is still looking to expand its links internationally and
to incorporate non-higher edication organisations such as companies,
publishers and businesses. Please ask any new potential partners
to contact Karl Donert for
memberships forms. An expansion form has been e-mailed to all partners
and there is also a copy available on the web site. Link

iLEAPS
Science Project iLEAPS (Integrated Land Ecosystem-Atmosphere
Processes Study) is the new land-atmosphere project within the framework
of the second phase of IGBP (International
Geosphere Biosphere Programme). iLEAPS is an international multidisciplinary
research program aimed at improved understanding of processes, linkages
and feedbacks in the land-atmosphere interface affecting the Earth
System. Specifically, the objective is to study how interacting
physical, chemical and biological processes transport and transform
energy and matter through the land-atmosphere interface. iLEAPS
research ranges from cell level to global scale, diurnal to centennial
and past to future. Integration of measurements and modeling is
essential, as well as coupling of surface and atmospheric models.
Participate in the 1st iLEAPS Science Conference in Boulder, Colorado,
USA, 21.-26. of January 2006. The conference will highlight the
relevant aspects concerning the interfaces between land-biosphere-atmosphere.

Schoolnet News: e-Twinning in Europe
A core part of the eLearning programme launched by the European
Commission early this year is the e-Twinning action. This new initiative
will also be supported by a network of National Support Services
with the objective to strengthen and develop networking among schools.
All young Europeans, during their time at secondary school, should
have the opportunity to participate, together with their teachers,
in an educational project with their counterparts in other European
countries. This experience could prove to be decisive in fostering
a European dimension in education and awareness among young people
of the European model of a multilingual and multicultural society.
Internet-based learning communities will contribute to improving
intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding. The e-Twinning
of schools will also help update teachers' and trainers' professional
skills in the pedagogical and collaborative use of ICT.

European Regions Day is celebrated in October each year
to familiarise European citizens with regional European information.
Xavier Tudela, the President of the European Region of the Year
Organisation, stated; "This day is intended to be a new inter-European
vehicle of integration which will show the regional truths of the
European continent to the 46 member countries of the Council of
Europe. The European Region of the Year Organisation is based in
Barcelona and was founded in 2001 to highlight two European regions
each year by promoting their activities to the other regions of
Europe.
Two European regions were chosen for 2004, Madeira, (Portugal) and
the German Speaking Community (Belgium.) In 2005 Piedmont (Italy)
and Kiev (Ukraine) will be highlighted. In 2006 Vojvodina (Serbia
and Montenegro) and Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina). The initiative
was started in Karelia (Russia) and Balearic Islands (Spain) in
2003. For more information: http://www.tery.org
